Bowless & High Force Waterfall

Hi Everyone,

We have had a wonderful time at Bowlees and High Force waterfall. This is a spectacular area of natural beauty and is just an hours car ride away from South Shields. My goodness, it is absolutely spectacular. If you haven't been you definitely should go.

The drive itself is wonderful, going down country roads and through chocolate box villages with lots of animals to spot along the way to keep the kids entertained.

We parked in Bowlees picnic area car park which you just need to give a donations of your choosing to park. From here it is a short but stunning walk along the river to Summerhill Force waterfall. There are lots of opportunities to splodge along the way and plenty of picnic tables along the route too. They have a little cafe (open from Feb 15th 2020) which looked lovely, a surprisingly clean mud kitchen and a small bird garden are all located in this one area. If you have younger children you could happily spend a few hours in this section alone.

We decided to go along to the High Force Waterfall which is just under 2 miles from the car park. This walk again was breathtaking. We passed many smaller waterfalls along the way which were so beautiful. We also enjoyed watching people canoeing and the ducks swimming.

This walk is more challenging than the first and in some parts quite steep so more suited to older childern (our 7 year old managed it fine) but absolutely worth it when you reach the top and see the amazing High Force Waterfall in all its glory. Its hard to believe that these magnificent falls are so close to home.
This is definitely one of our new top places to visit and we think you will love it too.
