Durham Fire and Ice festival review

Hi Everyone,

Today we visited Durhams Fire and Ice Festival. This year's theme was travel through time and there were some pretty cool sculptures from Dr Stranges Eye of Agamotto to Stephens Rocket complete with steam and flat caps to wear while posing for photos.

The trail takes you round the city of Durham and into the Catherderal which gives you the opportunity to really take in the sights. The ice sculptures are all fairly close by so the trail isn't to strenuous for little legs.

Along the route you can see a live ice sculpture being created and also opportunities to have a go yourself with the help of the Ice Crew who are all lovely and really take their time talking to the children and showing them how to chisle the Ice.

There are plenty of dining opportunities in close proximity to the trail. We chose Bells Fish and Chip restaurant which is next to the market place. Not only is their food lovely and very reasonably priced but it also has gluten free options which is perfect for our coeliac daughter.

We would recommend using the park and ride service if you are planning on driving. The busses run every 10 minutes and cost £2 per adult with children free it makes for a much easier day not having to worry about parking.

The last day to take part in the trail is tomorrow (Sat 22nd Feb) with fresh ice sculptures ready for the day ahead. Its well worth a vist and it's completely free to take part.

Durham Fire and Ice

Hi Everyone,

If anyone is planning on visiting Durham Fire and Ice tomorrow or Saturday Durham Bid have released a blog answering some questions about what will happen if the weather turns bad. So far it looks like the event will go ahead as planned but well worth a read before heading off.

Treetop Nets

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday we visited TreeTopNets (Ripon) right next to  lightwater valley, to try out their suspended bouncy nets. This activity is recommended for people between the ages of 3 and 105. One staff member even stated that the oldest couple to go on the course were 95 and 98. I have to say it really is a true family friendly activity. We saw all ages playing and having fun from small children to teens and adults alike. I know we certainly enjoyed the day as much as the kids.

The course consists of various bungie nets with slides, huge yoga balls, tree houses, battle balls and walk ways. The course is an ideal size to allow kids the freedom to run and play but big enough to keep them entertained for a good few hours.

I would recommend splitting the day in two with a lunch break. The nets can be physically demanding especially when running round so it's nice to have a bit of a relax and refresh.

There is a lovely little cafe inside the welcome centre and lots of picnic tables outside to enjoy a break.

We were a bit worried about the weather not being too great but we needn't have worried. It was cold and windy when we arrived but we soon warmed up playing on the nets. We were actually glad it was a cooler day so we could run round more.

The best part of the nets for the kids was definitely the giant yoga balls, they absolutely loved bouncing and rolling around amongst them. For me it was the slides. Jumping into a sack and sliding down the big nets was like being a care free child again.

The Treetop Nets also have activity trails to take part in which can be completed on the ground. If successfully completed you gain a certificate at the end which I thought was a nice touch. The kids really enjoyed the trail looking for the different animals hidden amongst the trees.

The fantastic staff at this centre have also given our community something wonderful to look forward too but more information on that will be revealed on Sunday 23rd February.

Anyway, this was a joyus day out filled with fun and laughter and one we will definitely be repeating.

Durham Fire & Ice festival

Hi Everyone,

The wonderful Fire & Ice trail returns to Durham this February half term on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 February 2020 with a brand new theme of Travelling Through Time, this a FREE event for the whole family to enjoy.

All the sculptures are inspired by travel, time and time travel.  There will be sculputers ranging from Stephenson's Rocket to sculptures inspired by some time travelling fictional classics.

The trail will lead you round the city of Durham so you will really be able to explore the delights of the city. Along route there will be demonstrations and hand on activities for the whole family to enjoy as well as some performances.

We took part in last year's trail and had a wonderful day. We took advantage of the Durham Park and Ride service as parking can be hard in the city. The trail took us a few hours to complete as there is lots to do and see on route besides the actual sculptures. We also stopped off for fish and chips at Bells by the market place (they had a fantastic gluten free menu) and finished the day taking in the fire performance. We have included some photos from last year for you to enjoy.
